Fibre versus finished fabric
Viscose is a cellulosic fibre. However, the fibre name does not describe the entire material: fabrics made from the same fibre group can have different weights, stretch and finishes. Compare specific samples rather than relying on the name on the label.
When to consider viscose
Viscose jersey is useful for designs where a soft drape matters, including dresses, blouses and looser styles. For a fitted design, assess stretch and recovery after stretching. Elastane changes these properties, but the elastane percentage alone cannot replace testing the finished fabric.
What to check on a sample
Hold the fabric against the light, drape it on the body and check whether it suits the intended construction. Sew a sample garment, wash it following the agreed instructions and compare its measurements. For light colours, pay particular attention to opacity and how seams look when stretched.
